We are continually drawn to estates that helped define the identity of their region while remaining uncompromising in their pursuit of terroir. Few producers embody this spirit in California more clearly than Dunn Vineyards. Since the late 1970s, Randy Dunn and his family have become synonymous with old-school Napa Cabernet Sauvignon — wines built not for immediate opulence, but for structure, longevity, and a transparent expression of Howell Mountain. In a region often defined by power and polish, Dunn remains a benchmark for restraint, mountain freshness, and age-worthy Cabernet.

  • Founded in 1978 by Randy and Lori Dunn on a small mountainside property in Angwin, the estate began with just 14 acres and five acres of existing Cabernet Sauvignon vines. At the time, Randy was working full-time as a winemaker in Rutherford while he, Lori, and their young son Mike farmed the vineyards during evenings and weekends. That same year, Randy arranged to farm neighboring vineyard parcels and purchase additional fruit, leading to the inaugural vintage of Dunn Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon in 1979.

The winery was officially bonded in 1981, and only two years later Randy Dunn became one of the key voices behind the creation of the Howell Mountain AVA — Napa Valley’s first official sub-appellation — helping establish the region as one of California’s great terroirs for Cabernet Sauvignon. Dunn Vineyards quickly earned a reputation for producing wines that stood apart stylistically from much of Napa Valley: structured, deeply concentrated, mineral-driven Cabernet Sauvignons built for decades of aging rather than immediate approachability.

As the estate grew through the 1980s, Randy expanded production and carved caves directly into the mountainside for barrel aging and cellar space. Over time, the winery evolved into a true multigenerational family domaine. Randy’s son Mike officially joined the estate in the early 2000s after studying winemaking and viticulture at Cal Poly, followed by Randy’s daughter Kristina. Today, the third generation has also joined the winery, with Mike’s son Alex now working alongside the family.

Despite its iconic status, Dunn Vineyards remains remarkably hands-on and focused. The family continues to farm 42 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon on Howell Mountain themselves, producing wines that remain steadfastly committed to the original vision: Cabernet Sauvignon that transparently reflects the rugged volcanic terroir, structure, and longevity of Howell Mountain.

  • Dunn Vineyards is centered entirely on Howell Mountain, where the estate farms Cabernet Sauvignon at elevations high above the Napa Valley fog line. The vineyards benefit from intense daytime sun exposure paired with significantly cooler nighttime temperatures, creating a long growing season that allows the fruit to ripen slowly while retaining freshness and structure.

The estate’s sites are planted predominantly on steep volcanic slopes composed of rocky, iron-rich soils with excellent drainage. These thin mountain soils naturally limit vigor and yields, producing small berries with concentrated flavor, firm tannins, and pronounced mineral character. The mountain environment consistently yields wines with darker fruit profiles, greater acidity, and more structural tension than many valley floor Cabernet Sauvignons.

Older vineyard parcels, including the historic Park Muscatine Vineyard, form the backbone of the estate’s top bottlings. These mature vines, combined with Howell Mountain’s rugged terrain and volcanic soils, are central to the distinctive character of Dunn Vineyards: powerful yet restrained Cabernet Sauvignon built for long-term aging.

  • Farming at Dunn Vineyards has always been deeply hands-on and centered around long-term stewardship of Howell Mountain. The Dunn family remains directly involved in every stage of production — from the vineyard to the crush pad and cellar — maintaining a small-scale, family-run approach despite the estate’s iconic status. Their focus has always been on producing Cabernet Sauvignon that transparently reflects the rugged volcanic terroir and natural structure of Howell Mountain rather than pursuing excessive ripeness or manipulation.

In recent years, the estate has continued evolving its farming practices with an increased emphasis on organic and regenerative agriculture. Since 2022, Dunn Vineyards has incorporated cover crops throughout the vineyards while introducing sheep during the off-season to naturally graze the grasses and provide organic compost to the soils. These practices are aimed at improving soil health, increasing biodiversity, and further strengthening the vitality and resilience of the vineyards for future generations.

  • In the cellar, Dunn’s philosophy remains remarkably traditional by Napa Valley standards. The wines are built for longevity, emphasizing structure, freshness, and transparency over extraction or immediacy. Fermentations are carried out with a restrained approach to preserve site expression, while élevage is intentionally lengthy to allow the powerful mountain tannins to integrate slowly before release.

The Howell Mountain wines are known for their firm structure, mineral character, graphite notes, and remarkable ability to age for decades. Unlike many modern Napa Cabernets, Dunn wines prioritize tension and savory complexity alongside dark fruit concentration. The reserve “El Camino” bottling represents the estate’s oldest vines and is produced only in exceptional vintages when selections can be made without compromising the flagship Howell Mountain wine.

Wines

Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon

Dunn’s flagship wine and one of the benchmark expressions of Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon. Sourced entirely from the estate’s volcanic mountain vineyards, the wine is traditionally vinified and aged for approximately 32 months in French oak prior to release, allowing the naturally powerful mountain tannins to integrate slowly over time. Structured, mineral-driven, and built for decades of aging, the wine remains a classical expression of Napa Valley Cabernet focused on freshness, restraint, and longevity rather than opulence.

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

First produced in 1982, the Napa Valley Cabernet offers a more accessible interpretation of the Dunn style while maintaining the estate’s hallmark structure and balance. Produced from a combination of Howell Mountain fruit alongside select valley floor parcels depending on the vintage, the wine is vinified traditionally and aged for approximately 32 months in French oak using low-impact barrels chosen to support the wine rather than dominate it. The result is a Cabernet defined by freshness, savory complexity, and long aging potential.

Reserve “El Camino”

Produced only in exceptional vintages, El Camino represents the pinnacle of Dunn Vineyards’ mountain Cabernet Sauvignon. Drawn from the estate’s oldest vineyard blocks, including parcels within the historic Park Muscatine Vineyard, the wine is selected from the cellar’s most profound barrels and produced in extremely limited quantities. Vinified in the estate’s traditional style with extended élevage in French oak, El Camino combines immense structure and concentration with remarkable lift and precision, showcasing the profound aging potential of Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon.
