Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg

Vosne-Romanée, Côte de Nuits, France

The Mugneret Family

We are very proud to represent the wines from Domaine George Mugneret-Gibourg, starting with the 2018 vintage. We had long admired this estate, from three generations of women who tend some of the Côte-de-Nuits’ most storied terroirs.

Marie-Christine and Marie-Andrée oversee one of Vosne Romanée's most renowned estates in an ever diligent yet warm manner. The domaine was founded by their grandfather, Andre Mugneret in 1933 but for the past three decades, “The Sisters” have run the winery in partnership with their mother, Jacqueline, who remains “the spirit of the domaine.”
After the sudden death of her husband, George in 1988, it was Jacqueline, who bravely assumed daily activities at the winery to ensure the domaine would not be sold but instead passed down from father to his two daughters. The family business has no signs of slowing down, as their daughters Lucie, Fanny and Marion have also joined the domaine continuing the female legacy which now spans across three generations and six women. Their wines have the dignified friendliness of the Mugneret sisters themselves - generous and welcoming with a classic style that preserves all the delicacy, fruit, and freshness of Pinot Noir.

  • The domain cultivates over 8 hectares (nearly 20 acres) with 9 different appellations, from north of Nuits Saint Georges to the south of Gevrey Chambertin.

  • The Mugnerets care for their vineyards sustainably, using natural treatments if necessary. Plowing between the rows to control weed growth and green harvesting to control yields is the norm.

  • Wines are made in a gentle and classic style.

In order to keep freshness and fruit, they are harvesting earlier than ever before. Generally a 5 days harvest - completely destemmed (except for Echezeaux starting in 2016)

Grapes are harvested by hand and are sorted on a sorting table at the cellar. Fruit is destemmed and fermented in temperature-controlled tanks on indigenous yeasts. Cold maceration depending on the vintage (especially if it’s a warmer vintage). Native yeast fermentation. Remontage once or twice per day. Sometimes pigeage depending on the vat, because they don’t want to extract too much.

The Mugnerets show particular skill in their use of new oak, villages wines see 10-20% new wood, premier cru wines 30-50%, and grand cru wines up to 70%. Barrel aging 15 month, during aging, they rack once just after the malolactic fermentation into another cellar for their second winter in wood. Wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Bourgogne Rouge

Les Lutinières located in the southeast of Vosne-Romanée, was inherited from André Mugneret’s parents in 1931. This parcel was classified as Vosne-Romanée Villages until 1936.

Vosne-Romanée

Blending 5 different lieux dits, including: Les Chalandins, Le Pré de la Folie, Les Champs Goudin, Les Columbiere, and Les Croix Blanches . All parcels have been in the family since late-1930s. Starting in 2018, they separated La Colombiere to bottle on it’s own.

Nuits Saint George 1er Cru Les Chaignots

"Chaignots" comes from the word "Chasne", old French for "chêne" (oak), as there were originally oak trees in this area. Georges Mugneret purchased the parcel in 1971. Brown limestone soil with very little clay in this sloping and pebbly parcel east-facing. Excellent drainage.

Nuits Saint George 1er Cru Les Vignes Rondes

Lower down on the slope below les Chaignots. This was the plot bought for Marie-Christine by her father. More green harvest here then elsewhere.

Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Feusselottes

First vintage was 1985. Replanted in 2012 due to frost in 2009. This parcel is just close to the village, located at the mouth of the “combe“ or the valley the feeds into Chambolle. Soils are alluvial, iron-rich silt on surface

Echezeaux Grand Cru

This wine comes from their two parcels — Les Rouges du Bas, older vines planted in 1955, on the slope and Les Quartieres de Nuits, where the soil is iron-rich red, with very small bits of limestone. At the bottom of the hill, just outside the wall of Clos Vougeot. They prefer to blend because the complexity of each site.

Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru

Soil is similar to Chambolle but altitude is higher and drainage is excellent. Planted on the end Combe de Lavaux

Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Some of the best placed vines in the entire Clos. From the northern part close to the Chateau.
