Colète 2017 is Marie and Raj’s first vintage. Their mission is to restore balance and terroir to Merlot from Napa Valley.
Marie and Raj’s Merlot is being made from a twenty year old vineyard, that is organically farmed having been certified organic in 2004. The soil is loam on a volcanic bedrock.
The fruit was 100% destemmed and had a cold maceration for five days. Fermentation was in 20 hectoliter Taransaud foudre for fourteen days. Their extraction style was very gentle, more of an infusion than an extraction. The wine was aged in used French 228 litter barrels for 22 months before being bottled when it got a touch of sulfur added. No sulfur was used during vinification and aging. The first vintage is just 1,200 bottles.
